Abstract
This study was designed to investigate whether occupational therapy involving structured handicraft programs targeting stroke patients reduces depression and promotes changes in daily activities and cognitive function.
Stroke patients with symptoms of depression were recruited according to subject selection criteria and a systematic handicraft program was applied for 12 weeks. The Korean version of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 was used to test for depression, while Korean Mini-Mental State Examination was used to measure cognitive function, and Korean Modified Bathel Index was used to evaluate changes in daily life, both before and after the intervention.
For statistical analysis, a Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test was performed and the statistical significance level was set at 0.05.
As a result of applying a systematic handicraft program to stroke patients with depressive symptoms, the symptoms of depression were statistically significantly reduced (p<0.05) and the independence of daily activities was significantly increased (p<0.05). However, although the cognitive function score increased after the intervention, but there was no statistical significance in the changes (p>0.05).
This study found that a structured handicraft program had a positive effect on depression reduction and increased independence in daily activities in stroke patients with symptoms of depression.
